Do you have a thorough understanding of the basics of personal
finance? How about detailed, hands-on knowledge of the homebuying process?
Then Polk CDC is looking for you! Polk CDC has been one of MERIT's key partners since our
founding. They offer a wide range of services in Polk County including
administering an IDA matched savings program, providing financial and home
ownership education classes, and offering low-interest housing rehabilitation
loans. The Polk Regional Housing Center is seeking realtors, bank
employees, mortgage and title professionals, and other knowledgeable
community members to help present its Financial Fitness and ABC's of
Homebuying classes-both in English and in Spanish. Financial Fitness courses
are four, 2.5 hour classes over four weeks covering the basics of budgeting,
credit, and financial institutions; the ABCs of Homebuying is one, 8 hour
class covering the basics of mortgages, house shopping, and closing. While
they have proven curricula for these courses, it is the experience and
commitment of financial professionals and community leaders like you that
keep these classes fresh and up-to-date. While these classes cannot be used to directly promote your
business, they can help you with CRA requirements and with meeting potential
clients. Polk CDC is always looking for more volunteers, so if you are
interested, please contact Nick Dollar or Celina Davila at the Polk Regional
Housing Resource Center, by phone at 503-831-3173 or by email at ndollar@polkcdc.org and at cdavila@polkcdc.org.
Salem Keizer CDC is partnering with One Economy Corporation to
provide free tax assistance to anyone who earned below $58,000 in 2009. You can access this service in three different ways: call

www.myfreetaxes.com/skcdc, or attend a free community workshop hosted by
the Small Business Development Center in both English and Spanish. The workshop will be held at the SBDC at 626 High Street NE in
Salem on Tuesday, February 9th from 1pm to 7pm. Participants are not required
to pre- register. You can expect to spend about an hour at the workshop. If
you are planning to attend, you are required to bring:
For more information and a more complete list of items you
should bring to the workshop, please see the event flyers: in
English and in
Spanish.
Volunteers will have the opportunity to produce an attractive
design and to decide how images and other material will be digitally
optimized and presented for the web. You will also be asked to test the site
for functionality in different browsers and at different resolutions, fix
errors and assist in taking pictures to be placed on the site. For more information about this opportunity, contact: Drew
Dillon at 503-991-8976 or drewdillon@minetfiber.com.
Thank you for your interest in this project!
Do your market research efforts need a boost? A presenter will
show you how to use Oregons Labor Market Information System (OLMIS). You will
also learn how to more effectively meet your business goals. A second
presenter will explain how to set SMART Goals that will put you on track to
business success. The workshop will take place on Wednesday, February 3rd from 10
am to Noon. Please bring your business cards and a sample of your product to
share during the networking time that will follow presentations. Please RSVP
by contacting Joanne Scharer at 503.399.5088 or by email: sbdc@chemeketa.edu.
Got a business idea? Not sure how to get started? If this
describes you or someone you know we have good news. MERIT has a class where you can test your business idea in an
informal, confidential setting. We call this Entrepreneurs 101, and we now
offer it monthly in three locations. Best of all it's free!
The class is held the second Thursday of every month in each of
these locations. In February, the classes will be held on Thursday February
11th at 9 am in Salem, 12 pm in Dallas and at 2 pm in McMinnville. To
register for the next Entrepreneurs 101 class, please call the SBDC at
