Get the latest trends in business finances in our changing economy

salem chamber of commerceNavigating the current economy doesn't have to be so difficult and confusing. Come to this month's Willamette Valley Business Forum to learn about Financing and Closing Business Transactions in 2010.

Pat O'Connor, an economist at the Oregon Employment Department, will address 2009 Year in Review and 2010 Economic Forecast. John Willburn, of Pioneer Trust Bank will fill you in on the status of the credit market and changes in lending. And Jim Griggs, an attorney at Saalfeld Griggs PC, will address your financing options and give you pointers on managing your assets and your entity.

This month's WVBF will be held on Tuesday, April 13 from 8:30 to 11:00 AM at the Chemeketa Center for Business & Industry (626 High Street NE). The cost is $39 for chamber members and $59 for non-members. MERIT clients can get in for $39. Check with Forrest to see if you are eligible for a scholarship if needed. Natural Choice Directory: The Healthy Green Pages

natural choice directoryIf you're a green business owner, consider putting a listing in the Natural Choice Directory. This directory is like the yellow pages for environmental-friendly and/or health focused businesses in the Willamette Valley.

It has hundreds of listings and ads for a wide variety of businesses, ranging from food stores, to health practitioners, to construction firms. The free, yearly publication is in its second year.

Financial Fitness and Home Ownership Workshops

money treeIf you are interested in building your credit, consider signing up for a financial fitness workshop in Dallas or Salem.

The Salem Housing Authority offers Financial Literacy classes in the Center 50+ at 2615 Portland Rd on the second Saturday of each month. The classes are open to the public. The next class will be held on April 10th from 9am to 1pm. For more information or to register, call Rosa Ramirez at 503- 588-6455. Click here to see a flyer.

Polk CDC offers a financial literacy series as well. The four week series is held in Dallas on Wednesday nights from 6-8:30pm and starts on May 4th. The cost is $20 per person or $28 per couple.

Polk CDC offers an ABC's of Homebuying workshop, which prepares you to make good decisions when purchasing a home. The next class is being offered on April 10th from 9am to 4:30pm in Dallas. The cost is $30 per person or $35 per couple. For information about Polk CDC's workshops, call 503-831-3173.

There are also home-ownership workshops being offered in Salem. NEDCO is offering an ABC's of Homebuying class on April 17th and May 15th. NEDCO also offers default and foreclosure prevention counseling. For more information about NEDCO's classes, click here.

Give a year to your community by becoming a VISTA!

AmeriCorps VISTA logoMERIT is currently seeking applicants for a VISTA position which will start in the Fall of 2010. The VISTA member will write a strategic plan to provide affordable legal services and increased sources of start-up and expansion capital to micro entrepreneurs served by MERIT and other business assistance programs in the Mid-Willamette Valley region.

The new VISTA will have the opportunity to interact with local governments, business organizations, local business incubators, financial institutions, educational facilities and social service agencies. He or she will also assist with training, client tracking and assessment, and grant writing activities for MERIT.

Applicants should be college graduates, preferably with experience in law or business. We are accepting applications until the position is filled. To apply, visit the AmeriCorps website by clicking here.

Salem Keizer CDC is also seeking a VISTA to help with fund-raising, managing volunteers and assessing the feasibility of a plan to provide a commercial kitchen to clients starting food-based businesses. View their application and apply here: AmeriCorps website.

VISTA is a one-year volunteer program run by the federal government. VISTA volunteers work full-time for a non-profit, gaining valuable work experience. During the year of service, VISTAs receive a small living allowance, some health benefits, and child care, if needed. At the end of the year, they are awarded a grant that can be applied to student loans or higher education.

City of Salem Budget Reductions

The City of Salem is facing budget cuts and has held a series of meetings with city officials to notify the public and solicit comments. No one participated in the meeting held in Spanish, so another meeting has been scheduled.

If you or someone you know is a Spanish- speaking resident of Salem, please consider sharing this information or attending the upcoming meeting. This meeting will help the city decide which services will be reduced or eliminated from the budget.
